Why Outdoor Weddings Are So Popular?

As a wedding photographer, outdoor weddings are definitely some of my favourites to capture. There is something special about celebrating in nature, surrounded by beautiful scenery and fresh air. From a photography perspective, outdoor weddings often provide lovely natural light and stunning backdrops, whether that's rolling hills, mountains, woodlands, gardens, or open countryside.

Outdoor weddings also create a relaxed atmosphere for guests. People usually have more space to mingle, enjoy a drink, and explore the surroundings compared to a traditional indoor venue. Many couples also choose to include outdoor games and activities, which can make the day feel even more personal and memorable.

Over the past few years, I've been lucky enough to photograph several outdoor weddings across the North West of England. Every wedding has been unique, but a common setup is to hold the ceremony outdoors and then move indoors for the reception. The examples below may give you some inspiration if you're currently planning your own outdoor wedding.

Outdoor Wedding Ideas and Inspiration

Here are a few real outdoor weddings I’ve photographed, each with a different setup — from DIY celebrations to venue-based ceremonies and open-air receptions — to give you practical inspiration for your own day.

One of my favourite outdoor weddings took place at a beautiful Airbnb property with extensive grounds during the summer. Rather than booking a traditional wedding venue, the couple created their own wedding experience from scratch. They hired a catering company, musicians, tables, chairs, and everything else needed to bring their vision to life.

Because they had plenty of outdoor space available, they were also able to organise several fun games and activities for their guests. The entire wedding took place outside, with guests only going indoors when they needed to use the facilities. We were incredibly fortunate with the weather too – it was warm but not too hot, with a gentle breeze throughout the day. The couple booked many of their suppliers relatively late, which may have given them more confidence about the seasonal weather. The whole day felt relaxed, personal, and full of joy.

Many wedding venues now offer flexible indoor and outdoor ceremony spaces, giving couples the best of both worlds. Venues with large gardens or open green areas often allow couples to decide on the day whether to hold their ceremony outside, depending on the weather conditions.

This flexibility can be incredibly valuable in the UK, where the weather can be unpredictable. Even if there is a chance of rain or strong sunshine, there are plenty of solutions available, such as stylish parasols, large umbrellas, or covered outdoor structures. In fact, this is the option chosen by many of the outdoor wedding couples I photograph, as it provides peace of mind without sacrificing the outdoor experience.

Not every couple wants to take the risk of planning a fully outdoor wedding. Fortunately, there are some venues that offer an outdoor feel while still providing protection from the weather.

One venue I photographed was built almost entirely from glass and filled with beautiful plants and greenery. It felt as though we were in a garden, but everyone remained comfortable regardless of the weather outside. It's a brilliant solution for couples who love the natural look of an outdoor wedding but want a reliable backup plan. These types of venues often photograph beautifully because they allow plenty of natural light into the space.

For this couple, they had their indoor ceremony with small number of family and friends, after that they went to celebrate with their guests. There were 120 guests there, but we still have plenty space. For this bar, there are metal structures to hold a roof, and it is partly covered, probably need to hire extra roof pnnels to cover them all. Luckily, we had a perfect weather for that day!

Outdoor weddings often create bright, natural, and timeless photographs. The combination of natural light, open space, and beautiful surroundings can help create images that feel relaxed and authentic. Every location offers something unique, whether that's countryside views, woodland paths, garden flowers, or dramatic skies.

If you love natural colours, bright imagery, and a relaxed wedding atmosphere, outdoor weddings may be the perfect choice for you. I hope these examples have given you some inspiration as you begin planning your own celebration.

Outdoor Wedding Tips

1. Keep the Ceremony Background Clean

When choosing the ceremony location, think about what will appear behind you in photographs. Try to avoid areas where cars may be parked or where people might gather directly behind the ceremony space. A clean background helps create more elegant and timeless images.

2. Use Shade for More Flattering Portraits

Direct sunlight can create strong shadows under the eyes and cause people to squint. If possible, position the couple under a tree, canopy, or covered structure for portraits. Soft, shaded light is often much more flattering.

3. Consider a Later Ceremony Time

Outdoor ceremonies that start after 2pm generally benefit from softer and more pleasant light, especially during spring and summer. Midday sunlight can be harsh, while later afternoon light creates a warmer and more romantic feel in photographs.

4. Plan for Unpredictable Weather

Even if the forecast looks promising, it's always worth having a weather backup plan. Large umbrellas, covered seating areas, marquees, or sheltered reception spaces can make a huge difference if conditions change unexpectedly.

5. Consider Hiring a Tipi or Marquee

If you've found a beautiful outdoor location but it doesn't have reception facilities, hiring a tipi or marquee can be an excellent solution. It allows you to enjoy your dream location while still providing shelter, dining space, and a comfortable area for guests to celebrate.
